As deaf as a post直譯是「像木柱一樣聾」。木柱、石頭、門戶等沒有耳朵，所以，
說 The old man is as deaf as a post/ a stone/ a door等於說「那老頭聽覺不靈」。

Sound 作名詞指「聲音」，作形容詞可指「健全」或「完好」，例如 a sound mind是「健全的心靈」。
鐘（ bell）的聲音響亮， as sound as a bell（像鐘一樣完好）可說是語帶雙關，指十分健康或完美，
例如： He might be old, but the doctor found him as sound as a bell（他雖然老了，醫生卻發覺他十分健康）。

As keen as mustard直譯是「像芥末醬一樣熱中或敏銳」。
芥末醬味道辛辣，有刺激作用，應是因此用來比喻「十分熱心」或「十分敏銳」，
例如：（ 1） His mind is as keen as mustard（他頭腦敏銳）。
  
As cool as a cucumber是「像黃瓜一樣涼」。
從前一般說 as cold as a cucumber，但現在多說 cool，指「十分冷靜」，例如： She stayed as calm as a cucumber when the police arrested her（警察拘捕她時，她仍然很冷靜）
